My friend Ryan, the man behind the DJ name, will spinning the classy tunes in between sets. Seriously, this guy has a great record collection.  He played at our show in September and it was so spot on to what I wanted to hear. Jazz/Ragtime/Motown…the works!  He puts up a good match to even some of the best of them…ahem…Mane One, I’m lookin’ in your direction…tee hee.

They all are vibrant amazing colors, totally unique, and these are just a few colors, there are dozens and dozens more and so many different hues & tones. Rax Records first release! Limited edition run of 500. We ship within 2-3 business days after receiving payment. Hooray for new vinyl!!

I scanned them in slightly crooked, but here they are! Zack did the cut outs for the paper construction, I used a scanned image of a painting I made (the fly), and I did the “spine” on the computer. The image on the back was taken in an industrial area of San Diego using magic and a very orange wall.

We spoke with the pressing company earlier today and it looks like the records should be here this week. Then we can turn our living room into a packaging center and get a ton ready for the two big shows with Autolux this weekend. First Soma on Saturday September 26th, and then Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa.

Rax Records is our own label composed of money, time, and devotion (but certainly not in that order). This is our very own self-released piece of music. Two songs, 45RPM, mixed vinyl and cute packaging. I’m so happy!

Mixed vinyl means that all the colors at the record press are combined to make a marbleized gray, with splotches of random color. Each record will be completely unique due to the pressing process. We went through United Record Pressing which has been around for ages, they put out some of the earliest Motown records and even served as housing for the touring groups (how cool!). The vinyl is getting pressed (hopefully we’ll get it in a few weeks) and the full-color cover art is done, so the first Dabbers vinyl is almost ready – hooray!

The Dabbers went on a day long photography adventure with Sade Williams and her assistant Alenna Sibounhom about a week ago. She shot several rolls of film, black and white, color and all in medium format. These are just a couple. We wore all of our own clothes (she let me borrow a dangly necklace and some hair ties…) and shot around San Diego in North Park, Golden hill, and a random parking lot.

The best part? We finished off the day with some hot ramen and ice cold water.

It’s my birthday on Friday, so I made a cute little flyer for our show. Yah!

The Dabbers have finally finished recording, and have replaced ALL of our songs with the fancy official EP versions of our album “And I Was Like, And They Were All”, which includes two never before posted songs.

All songs recorded/​​mixed/​​produced at Archival Sound, North Park, San Diego 2009.

Dropped by the art store today and bought a pack of colored construction paper, then turned our living room into paper shrapnel covered mess – by making this:

I used the outer space of his circle to make the top portion of mine. Same idea and two really different styles. Monday afternoons are well spent if you have scissors, a big package of construction paper and a purple glue stick (and someone to share these things with). I took photos of them, put them into Photoshop to remove the camera glare & cropped them so they are little bit more digital/pixelated than the originals (obviously).

Yesh!

I’ve been spending the last few months getting nestled and settle into a new place with my dear Z. Our band, The Dabbers, is one of the best parts. We practice in an industrial area of san diego where we can be incredibly loud and vibrate the walls, with no one to complain. Just try to hit a drum beat more than once in a residential cul de sac. Doesn’t fly with the neighbors, trust me on that one.

Being on stage in a two piece is a totally new experience too. Playing with four people (as I did in Braaiins!) allows one to disappear into the mix more, or if you make a mistake, there is often so much background and surrounding noise that the wrong note can melt in with the rest of the music. Stripping it down to just drums and bass keeps me on my toes much more, and allows me to take up as much space on stage as I want since Zack is glued down to a stationary drum kit. I absolutely love it! I’m having such a great time playing this kind of music, whatever one might define it (I’m not sure what the most current music lingo would want to tag us as), and we also aren’t playing so many shows that its exhausting.

We have finished recording all 12 of our songs at

Archival Recording with Mitch Wilson from No Knife, and are going in the studio this thursday to begin mixing. We’re are trying to avoid getting to tedious with this part. Just as Photoshop can completely change the original photo/art into a fabricated piece of computer genius, ProTools can alter the ‘realness’ of a track, transforming a messy chord into a microscopically clean and precise one. This is not what we are aiming for. We want to keep the grit, grime, and flavor, and thankfully Mitch is right on the same page with us (which I have to mention, recording with Mitch has been amazing, he is spot on to what we’re trying to accomplish, and has the most positively engaging attitude and personality about him).

Phew! Well that’s most of it.
