Tetsunori & His Benefit Show

4 Apr

Yay – art shows! It’s been a while. Just participated in a group show in South Park at the Disclosed Unlocation gallery (a newbie, tiny, and super cool space). Now working on a black & white line art piece (or three) this week for a benefit show in Japan that my friend Tetsunori Tawaraya is curating.  Although he currently resides in Tokyo, he was born and raised in the town of Tohoku, which was ravaged by the recent earthquake and tsunami, so he is putting the money toward rebuilding/recovery efforts. I’ve got big love for Japan and am excited for the opporutnity to be in my first ever Japanese group art show! I’ll scan my peices in later this week when we send them off. Show will be in late April.

Tetsunori is a pretty cool dude. That’s him on the right, with my other friend Max. And below that, an art installation Tetsunori did in Japan (of course – he lives there).

Yeah!

Art Show

22 Mar

I’m going to be in a group show this Saturday at a new gallery in South Park. Opening reception will be during the Spring South Park Walkabout from 6pm-10pm. There will be cute corn stalks with bubble eyes.

Next Show: Hippo Tank

31 Jan

I took this photo at the San Diego Zoo last summer. This brave big hippo came up to the glass and started grinning at all the yummy children in front of him, and then after posing like this for a few minutes, snorted really loud a few times (it sounded like a hippo “muah-ha-ha-ha”). So I figured I could immortilize the moment with a Dabbers flyer for our next show at the Casbah.

It will be presented/formally hosted by FM 94/9 for their About The Music program, which donates funds to schools for music education/classes. Cool!

Fresh Black and White

14 Sep

I’m really happy with this one. It was my first roll of black and white film, used in a Canon T50 (another swap meet find). I’ve been really inspired by Edouard Boubat, an incredibly photographer I discovered at the Museum of Photographic Arts this summer.  I recently was given a hefty book of 334 prints titled The Monograph. Words fail me on how to describe what he captures.

The Flyer, At Long Last

I wanted it to be crowded and cute and weird and polka-dotted all at the same time!

Sometimes it takes a photograph that someone else has shot to really appreciate my man.

Succulents!

6 Jun

We accidentally stumbled upon the San Diego Cactus & Succulent Society’s annual sale at Balboa Park today! I can’t believe what a coincidence it was since I’ve just recently become very interested in the little guys, and wanted to get more. What are the odds! We bought ten new succulents, special soil & rocks, and four pretty pots for only $50 total. I will be posting pictures very soon once I get them potted into their new homes. The loot:

Zoo

24 May

We went to the zoo today and bought memberships for a year (only $84 for two people, plus free guest passes & sky-tram rides!). Within just a few minutes of exploring, we ran across the panda exhibit and I recorded a little snippet of the big fat panda eating some bamboo. Pretty damn cute.

It’s strange that I haven’t been to the zoo in probably about 10 years, and I completely forgot it was even in San Diego. It’s so close to our neighborhood, and I drive by it all the time that I never even think about it, but once you walk in and start seeing giraffes and camels and super weird fox cat things (look up a “Fossa”), it’s totally worth it. Not to mention that hiking around the zoo for a few hours is pretty good exercise, and since we’ve spent the last two months catching up on Lost, we need the energy boost.

Read up a little on wikipedia, and yes, it really is a World Famous zoo, considered “one of the largest and progressive” zoos in the entire world and contains 4000 animals and 950 different species. Watching Planet Earth kind of made me feel incredibly removed from most of the animals on the show, assuming that I would never see them, ever, in real life. But remember those super hard to track down Bactrian Camels with only “800 remaining in the wild in northwest China and Mongolia and classified as critically endangered“? Yeah, those were there.

Here is a picture I took of a cute little kid and his two friends, you know, just hangin’ out.

Every time I’ve gone to the zoo before (about 2 times since I’ve lived in San Diego) it was crowded, filled with too many families, hot, most of the animals were hiding, and we were rushing to get through the entire zoo to get our moneys worth. Now that we have year passes, we can just drop by and say hey to the camels or the pigs or the lizards and walk around without that sense of rushrushrush, and do it anytime we want. Plus, as we discovered today, if you go there around 2-3pm on a Monday, barely anyone is there.

Cool!!

Three Things I Love, Love, Love Right Now

29 Apr

New songs.

New Garden.

Tangerine Tree Photography…

…our wedding photographer as of Monday. Hooray! The picture will take you to the TT Photography blog, and it’s worth the trip.  I can’t really even explain how small of a world it is that I should ever have gotten the pleasure of meeting Sheri (the face behind the lens), but it’s good to know that magical things still happen. She and her husband Erik do this photography together, which makes them even more ideal for the kind of vibe I want to create on our wedding day.  They really do LOVE love, and they certainly love each other and their family, and it comes out in their photos. Double Hooray!

Ink: Healing Kitten

21 Apr

It’s still healing and a bit scabby, so don’t mind the unevenness of the coloring. Oh, and that’s my own mole perfectly aligned to be the kittens beauty mark as well.  After looking at his selection of colors I decided I wanted to do a purple and teal instead of red and light blue. I already have red on this arm and wanted to mix it up. The blue really *pops* when you see it in person, so the picture does little justice. It is the second addition to my right arm, and the fourth addition to the whole “collection” thus far. I can’t wait until it’s not puffy and tender so I can actually pet my new kitten ink.

Hooray!
